IASI-NG will be the infrared hyperspectral sounder on board the next generation of EUMETSAT's polar orbiting satellites. This instrument's heritage lies in the IASI instrument, which has been EUMETSAT's flagship operational infrared sounder for the last 13 years.

With its measurements providing access to high vertical resolution information on temperature and water vapour, IASI provided numerical weather prediction (NWP) with the biggest leap in forecast skill that had been seen from the introduction of a new satellite instrument. The excellent signal to noise ratio and spectral resolution meant that IASI also delivered significant advances in atmospheric composition monitoring, with detection of species previously thought to be undetectable from space.

IASI-NG is an innovative instrument that will have twice the spectral resolution of IASI, and improved noise performance. Not only will this provide even more accurate and precise measurements for NWP and nowcasting, but it will allow even more detailed analysis of chemical species and particulates. Combined with the long heritage of IASI data, it is also expected to deliver an excellent historical record for climatic studies.
