Lessons learned by three climate scientists while visiting with graziers of northern Australia (#183)

  1. Bureau of Meteorology, Melbourne, Australia
  2. University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, QLD, Australia

As part of the Northern Australia Climate Program (NACP), the authors of this presentation travelled to northern Australia to connect with local graziers and others involved in the grazing business of the north. Matt Wheeler travelled to the Kimberley and northern NT, Tim Cowan to central Queensland, and Harry Hendon to the southern and central NT. They were accompanied by Dr Chelsea Jarvis from the Centre for Applied Climate Sciences of USQ and joined by the local NACP Climate Mates who are local grazing industry experts employed by NACP to help deliver climate knowledge and information to end users. These trips provided a rare opportunity for the authors to interact closely with northern graziers, allowing for knowledge transfer both ways. This presentation concerns the lessons learned by the climate scientists from the local graziers, including:

  1. They expect you to know everything about the weather and climate, so it pays to comprehensively study the Bureau's website beforehand.
  2. They are interested in all time scales of variability and forecasts, from tomorrow to next week to next month to next season to next year.
  3. They want to know why a forecast is saying what is says to have trust in the forecast. That is, they want to know about the climate drivers.
  4. Make it relevant to their local region or rainfall station.
